健康成果和人口公平中心 (希望) 亨茨曼癌症研究所犹他大学 (联合国)与 蒙大拿 State University Center for American Indian 和 Rural Health Equity (CAIRHE), received a grant for Cancer Control in Persistent Poverty Areas from the 国家癌症研究所 (NCI)是美国国立卫生研究院的一部分. 新的拨款是 国家癌症登月计划, 由拜登-哈里斯政府领导, 和 it will bring together the expertise of the Center for HOPE 和 CAIRHE to exp和ir impact through two initiatives that address poverty as a fundamental cause of cancer-related inequities.

的 grant falls under the Persistent Poverty Initiative, started by the NCI. 他们的目标是赋予机构权力, 诊所, 社区, 和 tribes to collaborate 和 develop a cancer prevention 和 control research program that focuses 和 serves people living in persistent poverty. 的y aim to provide resources 和 support for this collaborative effort.

“的 poverty level for a family of four is an income of $30,000 a year or less,” explains 大卫·W. 湿润的博士, senior director of cancer health equity science 和 director of the Center for HOPE at 亨茨曼癌症研究所, 和一个Jon M. 和卡伦·亨茨曼 Presidential Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences 在 U. “不幸的是, people living in poverty have a far greater likelihood of getting almost every type of cancer, 和 it’s critical to eliminate this inequity if we are meaning to reduce the pain 和 suffering due to cancer.” 亚历山德拉·亚当斯医学博士, director of CAIRHE at 蒙大拿 State University 和 co-PI for the grant notes th在 inequities for Native American 社区 are especially severe.

切尔西·施莱赫特,公共卫生硕士,博士, researcher at 亨茨曼癌症研究所 和 assistant professor of population health sciences 在 U, will lead a project in Utah that addresses the social determinants of health 和 tobacco usage. Social determinants of health are factors that put a person at a higher risk of getting cancer such as being born into poverty, 没有保险, 住房不稳定, 或者缺乏教育. Wetter说烟草的使用, 哪些会大大增加患癌症的风险, has become heavily concentrated in areas where people are experiencing poverty 和 are medically 没有保险.

Emily Tomayko, PhD, RD, Assistant Professor in Health 和 Human Development 和 CAIRHE researcher at MSU will lead a project addressing the social determinants of health 和 addressing obesity prevention to lower cancer risk in Native American populations across four states. 的 project uses a culturally tailored family-based wellness program based on two r和omized clinical trials by Drs. Tomayko 和 Adams developed in partnership with 8 tribes nationally.

“We have 蒙大拿 experts involved in our Center for HOPE tobacco use project 和 Utah experts involved in the CAIRHE obesity project,韦特说。. “因为这些合作, it gives us the opportunity to have a much greater impact with respect to reducing health inequities.”

Together, these initiatives are called HOPE 和 CAIRHE 2gether (HC2). 根据NCI专家的说法, the long-term goal of H2C will be to build capacity to foster cancer prevention, conduct research 和 promote the implementation of programs 和 practices throughout areas of persistent poverty to reduce the effects of cancer-related disparities.

“HOPE 和 CAIRHE 2gether is not only funding incredibly exciting research but is so much more given it establishes the foundation for a new partnership to address health inequities across 蒙大拿 和 Utah, 以及附加状态,” Neli Ulrich博士, chief scientific officer 和 executive director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at 亨茨曼癌症研究所. “的 populations living in persistent poverty addressed by HC2 include large proportions of Latinos 和 Native Americans, 还有农村和边疆地区. 的se populations face major challenges in cancer prevention 和 care. Doctors Wetter 和 Adams have brought together an exceptional team, 和 we are thrilled about this important new partnership with 蒙大拿 State University.”

In addition to the grant to study Cancer Control in Persistent Poverty Areas, the study is also supported by the NCI including P30 CA042014 和 Huntsman Cancer Foundation.
